Dia de los Niños - Kids´ Day

Friday is Dia de los Niños, a day where the kids are apparently spoiled rotten (unlike every other day!). It kicks off an important week, because the 15th is Dia de la Independencia. It´s hard to tell exactly what will happen on these days (maybe because no one really knows yet), but it seems to be Carnival-like with games and parades and hot dogs and songs and not a whole lot of teaching....

... which is why Kelly and I have chosen to take Friday off from school! There´ve been a bunch of Peace Corps people in town this week to gather before going up to Guatemala today for the big US-Guat soccer game (it is a big game, actually, b-c altho the US just qualified for the World Cup with their win over Mexico on Saturday, Guatemala is currently in 4th place and only the top 3 teams in the region qualify). Anyway, some people are staying up there for the weekend (including our old roomie Jonno), so since Kelly and I couldn´t take a days off in the middle of the week we had planned to bus up there on Friday after school. But then we realized that Friday is pretty much a lost day anyway, and it´d be much more fun if we could get all the travelling done on Thursday and then hang out with everyone for the whole weekend!! So that´s the plan, we´re really quite excited about it. We may stay in Antigua for the weekend, everyone says it´s a lot of fun, or there´s some lake nearby and we might check that out. Whatever we do, I´m sure it will involve a fair amount of jalons, fast food, and beer :)
