Copan Ruinas

In between Halloween parties this weekend, we went to the famous Copan Ruinas, ruins of a Mayan city that was abandoned around 800 AD. It´s probably the biggest tourist draw in Honduras, and for the first time we felt like tourists too! But it was absolutely beautiful, mindboggling really at what these people were able to accomplish and how they lived in the middle of the mountains. One of my favorite thing was a huge staircase with hundreds of stones beautifuly and carefully carved. It turns out that it´s an encyclopedia of sorts, a documentation of hundreds of years of Mayan history. Makes me want to be an anthropologist or archaeologist and spend my time digging through ruins and learning about cool cultures. Strange too to think how similar this place seemed to Roman ruins I saw years ago - ampitheatre, city hall - and how civilizations everywhere can have so much in common.

btw, the parts of Honduras being hit by this latest hurricane are on the Carribean and Nicaraguan side, nowhere near us. However, we had been planning to go to the Bay Islands in the Caribbean later this week, and seem like the damage isn´t extensive enough to ruin our plans!
