There Are Three Kings

Today is the day before Dia de los Reyes, and for those of you who have forgotten your Paraguayan culture, it’s the kings who bring presents for kids here (like they did for Jesus, get it?). And like many American kids who just HAVE to open presents on Christmas Eve, some families have already opened the gift from the Kings. At Angelica’s house I witnessed the following conversation while the kids played with their new doll and truck, respectively:

Mariana, the 3-year-old: Mommy, but who ARE the kings?
Angelica doesn’t answer, sips terere to avoid the question.
Mariana: Are they real men?
Angelica: Yes, dear.
Mariana: Are they drunks?
Angelica: No, just very rich men who bring toys to all the boys and girls.
